About sustainable internships
For recent graduates and those still studying, it can be difficult to get the relevant experience needed to find a good job. Qualifications and high grades definitely help, but nothing beats having real-life experience working in the environmental sector.
Many turn to short-term internships, in order to develop their skills and get a foot in the door. Sometimes, making these connections will lead to a more permanent role once the internship is finished!

Top Tips for Interns
- Start applying early. If you’re looking for a summer internship, don’t wait until the last minute to start looking. Likewise, don’t wait until after graduating – make sure you’re prepared so you have the best chance to get something lined up for when you finish your studies!
- Start making a list of places. Do some research online using search engines like Sustainability Jobs or platforms such as LinkedIn to get a list of companies you might like to work for.
- Make contact and show initiative. Some places might already be offering internships, but if not, there’s no harm in emailing them and asking if any work is available. This shows you’re serious, and lots of companies would be happy for the extra pair of hands!
- Build a strong application. Make sure you include all your work experience when applying – just because it may not be directly relevant, all jobs teach you something that you can bring to the table, be it communication skills, word processing, or working as a team.
- Don’t stress too much! It’s easier said than done but try not to get too stressed about finding work. Something will always come up, and there are plenty of other jobs you can do in the meantime.
